Summary
- The original work on which this compilation is based was completed in 1239, as indicated in its two prefaces, one by Lü Wu (1179--1255), and another at the end by the author Zhu Mu (died 1255). It was reprinted in 1267 by Zhu Mu's son Zhu Zhu (jin shi 1256). The original work had two parts, part one in 43 juan and part two in seven juan, along with a 20-juan supplement and a one-juan appendix. This reprinted edition has 70 juan. According to Zhu Zhu's postscript, dated 1267, 30 or so years after the first edition the original blocks had become old and some characters had become indecipherable, so it was necessary to engrave new woodblocks, which explains the addition of the words xin bian (newly compiled) to the title. In the new edition, omissions in certain regions were filled in and more than 500 new entries were added. The reprint probably began in 1266 and was completed in 1267. The descriptions covering the territory of the Southern Song (1127--1279) begin with the region of Zhe Xilu and end with that of Lizhou Xilu, listing first Lin'an Fu, which was then a prefecture. Larger inscriptions are enclosed in double lines; the smaller ones, such as names of the prefectures, social customs, and other details, are printed in reverse with characters in white on a black background. There are some marginal notes, with names of the administrative units of prefectures, districts, and camps. The existence of some simplified characters in the work reflects a characteristic of the printed works produced in Southern Song Jian'an.
