Map Cuba.
About this Item
Title
- Cuba.
Summary
- This detailed map of Cuba was published by the Rand McNally Company of Chicago in 1904. It shows provinces, principal cities and towns, and the 18 railroads then in operation in the country. The six provinces are indicated by different colors. A large inset map in the upper right shows the port and city of Havana; the key at the bottom of the main map indicates points of interest in Havana. Smaller inset maps depict Port Matanzas; Cardenas and Santa Clara Bays; the Port of Cienfuegos; and the Port of Santiago de Cuba. A note at the upper left gives the population of the island as 1,572,797 and (inaccurately) characterizes Cuba as a "United States Protectorate." Formerly a colony of Spain, Cuba was seized by the United States in the Spanish-American War of 1898. It remained under the control of a U.S. military government from 1898 until 1902, when a constitution was adopted and the sovereign Republic of Cuba was established. The map originally appeared in 1898 as Rand McNally's New Business Atlas Map of Cuba. American companies invested heavily in Cuba after 1898 and came to dominate the economy of the country until the revolution of 1959 led by Fidel Castro.
