- Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna (1830-1911) was born Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg. Her name was Russianized on her conversion to Russian Orthodoxy and marriage to Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich (1827--92), son of Emperor Nicholas I, in 1848. This full-length portrait photograph, taken when she was about 30-35 years old, shows her facing left, warmly dressed, holding an umbrella, and standing by a panel of drapery. The image is from the Personal Album of Alexander II (1860-1870), which is preserved in the Russian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents, Moscow. Alexandra and Konstantin had six children, but after 20 years of marriage, Konstantin formed a long-running liaison with a ballet dancer called Anna Vasilyevna Kuznetsova with whom he had more children. A severe stroke left Konstantin badly disabled for his last several years of life. Alexandra herself suffered a stroke eight years before she died and lived out her days at the Marble Palace in Saint Petersburg.
